Politicians weave webs on the Net
Remo was right when he crooned "Politicians don't know how to Rock 'n Roll". But knowing about all the possible ways to get votes is right up their alley. In the last U.S. presidential elections, television was the main vehicle of publicity in the quest to get a free stay at the Whitehouse. This time around, they've jumped onto the Internet, creating home pages and sites where they talk about the party they belong to, their objectives, promises, blah, blah, blah... If you're on of those for whom seeing is believing, make a stopover at Campaign 96 - a site for information from and about the presidential candidates of the U.S. You could also take browse through the guides to the Senate & House elections. That was the U.S., and you're sadly mistaken if you're under the impression that such things happen only there. Our very own Indian politicians are not too far behind - a surprise on the Net was Kamal Darshan - - the World Wide Web site of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) This site was created with an objective of presenting an accurate, factual and objective image of BJP and its views, specially with "deliberately biased propaganda in a section of media to malign and misrepresent BJP." This site is full of stuff about the party, their policies and issues, & the 1996 general elections. But the "Current Issues & Events" section is an immediate attention grabber what with The Jain Hawala Case hitting you right in your face. Like the flashing neon signs that cheap motels abroad use to attract attention, the havala site is highlighted using blinking text. Another eye - catching topic is Campaign 1996. This site has a lot of fuel provided by L.K. Advani - the manifesto, yatras, resolutions, and their main plank - Hindutva. This site is maintained by "Overseas Friends of BJP - USA" (OFBJP) Launched in the New York in the April of 1991, they now have units in London and Canada too. If you happen to be a die - hard BJP supporter, you can spend a lot of your time at the OFBJP site. You could send an e-mail to the OFBJP president, or even subscribe to their moderated news and discussion list. Incidentally, since the beginning of Feb this year, 1936 hits have been registered at this BJP site.
Buss yaar, enough of politicians - let's move onto rock 'n roll instead. The World Chart Show, aired on Radio Star 107.1 FM had a unique contest last week. The World Chart Show, for those who aren't too much into radio, is a show that is produced in the US, and aired worldwide. Last week as a follow - up of the Grammy Awards, they had a contest, with CDs by various artistes as prizes. All that the listener had to do was to send an e-mail to [email protected] with the answer to the question : In which year were the Grammys first held ? Now if you knew that answer, the contest was a piece of cake. But if you didn't, you had two options. Option one was to count back the number of years from this years (38th) awards. Option two was the one I opted for : I used Webcrawler, a search engine, and looked up the phrase 'Grammy Awards'. What I landed up with was a whole list of sites related to the awards. Within a minute, I reached a site that talked all about the history of the Grammys - the origin et al, and gave me the answer I was looking for - May 4, 1959.
Those who watched Star Sports during the World Cup 96, would be aware of the contests held on the Internet. The first was "The World Beaters" contest, where viewers had to choose a team consisting of the creme de la creme of all teams in the worldcup. The second one was "The Spectacular Catches" contest, where you had to rank 6 catches shown by them. The deadline for the above contests was March 25, but don't feel bad if you missed them. You can still enter the "Master Blaster" contest. All you have to do is key in who you thought was the best batsman here. If your answer matches that of a panel consisting of names like Syed Kirmani, Sunil Gavaskar, Farokh Engineer, etc... you stand a chance of winning a trip to the US, handycams, and CD systems. The last date for this contest is April 13, so get those fingers flying over your keyboards, before you miss the bus !
