Indology, Indian entertainment, and a trip to Goa
Did you know that the distillation of perfumes, the making of dyes, the techniques of algebra, algorithm and surgery, the concepts of atom and relativity, and the game of Chess are found in ancient India and there are evidences which indicate that they might have originated here ? No, na ? Well, neither did I, until a recent surfing session.
Sudheer Birodkar, a student of Indology has recently completed a book (with 18 years of effort in it) on the subject, "India's Contribution to World Culture". This book aims at disproving the generally held belief that in ancient times India had only been a land of spiritual development with modest achievements as far as material culture goes. Keeping his target audience in mind, Sudheer took the decision of converting his book into HTML format and hosting it on Tripod. Check it out at http://members.tripod.com/~sudbee/
DEN (Dale's Entertainment News) - http://www.indianbusiness.com/den, is a monthly Indian entertainment magazine on the Internet. DEN clubs news, reviews and previews of films, television and music with modelling, fashion, art and culture in an attempt to give readers a complete picture of the Indian entertainment scenario. DEN is conceived, edited and partly written by freelance film journalist, Dale Bhagwagar. Besides the current edition, monthly archived issues are also available, right since DEN first saw the light of day in November 1996. Check it out if you're one of those entertainment junkies !
"Wherever you may roam, there's no place like home" - waxed a poet long ago, and numerous Indians around the world drive home the point - even in cyberspace. Most Indians abroad who have homepages to their credit, inevitably have a link to some pages Indian. Some, full blown comprehensive mini-sites - about India, or in more specific cases, about the state they left in search of greener pastures (and notes).
Goa Mania (http://www.kuwait.net/~ulysses/goa/) is one such page with 20 sections - from tourist information and time pass to recipes and learning konkani. Even though Goa Mania is not a commercial site, and is actually a personal site, it is very detailed, and has won numerous awards for its content.
Some of the unique sections here are the konkani, recipes, and mailing list sections. If you need to learn konkani, you can easily pick up commonly used phrases and sentences, words and their pronunciation (and in the near future, even audio files teaching you to speak easy). Or you could spend some time learning how to make Goan sweets, curries, masalas, pickles, meats and shellfish. Drool ! Then there are mailing lists you can sign up for - once again related to Goa yaar, what else do you expect from a site on Goa ?
If you browsed Goa Mania a couple of weeks ago, you would have got the feeling that the creator is an midi fan, what with one song or the other continuously playing in the background on most pages. Faux Pas on the very first page was the national anthem which automatically started playing - what were we to do ? Stop surfing, stand at attention, and waste Internet connection time ? I think not. But then that's the advantage of having your own homepage - you can put up whatever you want. A little discretion though is always advised when you're creating your own pages.
Just how dynamic a medium the web is came across just yesterday : the site had been stripped of midi files, accelerating surfing !
