Use the Net or just do timepass in the office

Our site-seeing trip in Cyberspace this week has three office related stop-overs, and all are engrossing, though for different reasons - the first because of its utility, and the other two because they're great time-pass.

CEO Express (http://www.ceoexpress.com) is the start off point for busy executives who would like to tap useful business related sites on the Internet, but don't know where to find them. CEO Express is based upon the popular 80/20 Rule - that 80% of the useful information on Internet comes from 20% of the available websites. CEO Express, sifts through this chaotic array of information and critically select the links that you need on your desktop everyday. Links to news, magazines, search engines, law, legislature, banking & finance, statistics, company research, reference sites, office tools, airlines - this site is exhaustive with hundreds of useful links all on one page.

If that site was too heavy for you, spend some time at Don's Boss Page (http://www.donsbosspage.com/), which has been on the Net since January 1996. And if you have an Internet connection at work, and work on a multimedia PC, this site is a must-visit. What is this Don's Boss Page all about you ask ? Well, it's a page for employees who enjoy surfing the Internet and hate any distractions - like work. The homepage has a big picture of a spreadsheet that fills your computer screen, so if you're surfing this site, anyone passing by will think you're busy working. If you're surfing other sites on office time, a "Panic Button" or the "Personal Protector" allows you to immediately switch to this page so as to appear as if you're working hard, while in reality, you're hardly working.

Another useful page at this site is Sound Busy, an audio-enhanced page that's perfect for cubicle and office dwellers alike. Kick back and go to sleep on the job (or surf) - and rest assured that the convincing sound effects will make it sound like you're busy typing while you enjoy. The site also offers a variety of wacky e-cards that'll brighten any co-worker's day. Surfing through the site will also arm you with ways and means to avoid being caught web-handed!

Another great timepass site is Jokewallpaper (http://www.jokewallpaper.com) - another hilarious site. The site originally started out offering funny wallpapers for your computer, but also offers mainstream humour. The site has a nice range of downloadable wallpapers with humorous themes - parodies on situations and people. Now the problem with visiting such a site on a regular basis (to get the latest wallpaper), means that your Netscape browser has the URL (www.jokewallpaper.com) in it's recently visited site list. Worse still, if your company is tracking the URLs you visit, the name does not leave much to the imagination. So what the website creator did is register a new domain name that sounds more business like, and something your boss would be happy with you visiting - Corporate Excellence is the alternate name (http://www.corporate-excellence.com/). All it does is point to the same site, but with a very saintly URL to drive away any doubts or suspicions your boss may have.
