You've no doubt heard that Sabeer Bhatia (the co-founder of Hotmail) recently quit Microsoft with plans for another start-up Internet project. What made Hotmail popular when they launched was the ability to access mail in an easy web based interface, anywhere in the world. While you can access mail in your VSNL (or other ISP) mailbox no matter where you are in the world, it involves messy settings and leaving your mail all over the place, which is another reason that Hotmail caught on like wild fire. At last count, Hotmail had over 30 million subscribers - reason enough for every Yahoo, Excite and ZdNet to offer web based email accounts.

Most of these web-based email services allow you to consolidate your email from other accounts. Which means that you can use Hotmail to retrieve your VSNL mail but reply to those emails from your Hotmail email address. Wouldn't it be nice if you could read your VSNL mail in a web-based format, and reply to it as if you're replying from your VSNL account? Mail Start has fulfilled those wishes - this useful service allows you to use a browser to read your email, reply, forward, delete and send new messages, making your email accessible from anywhere. All you have to do is log onto the site, enter your email address and your password, and it will get your mail for you in the convenient click and read HTML format. And the best part is you don't have to get yet another email address.

What about the risks in giving your email address and password to an unknown service? The founders have anticipated fears and concerns of users and have signed up with a renowned third party privacy organisation, TRUSTe, to certify that they don't do anything malicious with the data passing through our system. Besides, you don't have to register with Mail Start and they don't log your session or store your email - just display it for you to read and manage. If you want to store your email, or use the features you're so used to with the other free email services, you can subscribe for free with Mail Start Plus which allows you to store your messages, filter them, track them, and maintain an address book online! Once again, you'll still be using your original email address and will not have to get a new address to use these services! What more could you ask for?

Well, if "more freebies" was your answer, today's your lucky day!

CleanCIH: This small 17 K program detects and cleans the Win95.CIH (also known as CIH, Spacefiller, and Win32.CIH) virus that infects 32-bit Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT executable files. CIH usually becomes memory-resident, and infects all the other 32-bit EXE files opened, and gets activated on the 26th of each month

Celebrity Calculators: (Went under renovation after article went to press!)
If you're tired of the boring calculator provided with Windows, download a celebrity calculator - a calculator with a celebrity thrown in. The site has quite a few celebrities for you to choose from.

PCBook2: Printing wastes a lot of paper, and PCBook2 is all set to save our forests by allowing you to print up to four pages on one side of a sheet of paper. You can also use the booklet option to create a small booklet!

MailCall: MailCall is an Internet email notification program with numerous enhancements. You can preview and delete messages without retrieving them, and launch the email program of your choice.

CSBAG: Customizable Slithering Button Application Generator generates "joke" applications. With CSBAG, you can create your very own customizable prank program with up to three buttons. When someone attempts to click on one of the buttons, it slides away every time they get close to it - great laugh!.
