It's that time of year once again - anniversary time as this column
turns three this week! And a big thank you to all those who emailed
with congratulations (well, all three of them actually). But seriously
though, thanks for all the support and feedback you guys have
given this column over the past three years! In keeping with tradition,
this year too, there are some hand-picked downloads that have
been unearthed up from different corners of cyberspace. And the
best part is that they're all completely free - not your usual
trial shareware! Go berserk and start downloading these goodies
by clicking below!
Office BS
Humour is big on the Net, and Office BS has some more humour in
store for you with a collection of ready-to-print funny faxes,
stories, memos, and definitions. The jokes are categorised for
quick laughs too. No prizes for guessing what BS stands for!
Joke and Prank
Joke and Prank are two very small executables that display alarming
error messages. For a laugh, put them in someone's startup folder
and lurk in the background the next time they boot their computers.
MiniApps
MiniApps is a set of 24 different freeware applications. These
include notes and calendar utilities, security utilities, file
and text managers, and various system utilities. Try them out
- you're bound to fall in love with some of them!
Task Menu
Task Menu is a neat utility that offers you the ability to define
your own icon in the system tray. It creates a pop-up menu that
includes links you have chosen, so you can launch anything you
want easily.
QCI 2000
ICQ is the most popular instant communication tools in use on
the Net today. Friends and colleagues are always just a click
away. But what would happen if you lose that contact list? NetNews
reader Aalaap Ghag has developed a useful program that allows
you to back up and restore your ICQ contact list, including your
message history, ignore list, invisible list, and more. Go get
it!
CheatBook DataBase '98
If you're hung up on computer games and cracking them, this one's
for you. CheatBook DataBase '98 is a compilation of cheats for
a number of popular games of 98, specially in the action genre.
Lots of help to guide you into cheating your way to victory and
showing off to your friends. And if CheatBook doesn't have what
you're looking for, an index of game-cheat Web sites is there
to take you ahead anyway
PopOff
Ever since free homepage sites started displaying ads in pop up
windows, surfing has become irritating. To counter that, try using
PopOff - a small program that works with your browser to prevent
annoying pop-up windows from opening while you're surfing. PopOff
runs automatically in the background, launching when you start
your Web browser.
Cyber-Info Hotmail Notify
Cyber-Info Hotmail Notify is an email notification utility that
can check multiple Microsoft Hotmail accounts for new mail. A
pop-up message with sound lets you know that mail has arrived,
and the program also allows you to point and click to directly
read the message and saves you the trouble of logging in and navigating
through your account. Very useful for people who spend hours connected
to the Net.
But finally, the mother of all of these downloads is
CWebMail
- a piece of software that is a boon to people who don't like
wasting online time reading their mail on the Hotmail site. The
program allows you to download your email from Hotmail to your
computer using Netscape or Eudora or many other email software
packages. This way you can log on, download all your mail from
Hotmail in one shot, and then send all you mail in another few
seconds, and save the time you would normally have wasted at Hotmail.
Thanks to Nikhil and Satyajeet for breaking the news.
Here's to the start of another year of Net News !
