Murphy rules! Murphy's first law states: If something can go wrong, it will! Well, last week, when readers tried visiting my website for all the free downloads, the server was initially down. And when people could connect to the site, the download links had changed. However, all that's taken care of now, so if you didn't manage to get hold of those freebies last week, try downloading them this week! This week we'll take a look at how the Net can be a very useful tool and how you can exploit the Net for virus protection and system troubleshooting. And if you're interested in a free trip to San Francisco, you're reading the right column
Well known anti-virus company McAfee has launched a PC Clinic on the Internet, currently in preview mode. Which means that till it is launched we can access it for free, after which subscription fee will be US$5.95 per month (tentatively from March onwards). With a subscription to PC Clinic, you avoid the cost of software upgrades and are guaranteed the latest versions. But for us who thrive on freebies, now is the best time to register for free and make full vasool of the three services offered on the site: VirusScan Online, QuickClean, and PC Advisor. The only restriction is that you have to use Internet Explorer 3.0 or higher, and Netscape is not supported.
VirusScan Online scans your files for harmful viruses - and removes them while you wait. The nicest thing about this is that new viruses are created daily and what better or faster way to get the latest updates than to log onto the website for the latest virus busters?
QuickClean is a one-stop cleaning service for your PC. In seconds it clears unneeded files from your Internet cache, Recycle Bin, and Temporary folder - without removing critical or required files. It also checks for broken Shortcut files. The end result: more storage space and better performance from your PC.
PC Advisor guides you through troubleshooting hundreds of software and hardware problems you could possibly face with your computer. It interactively takes you click by click closer to diagnosing where the real problem lies. Be it your monitor, keyboard, mouse, networking, error messages or connectivity issues, help is a few clicks away.
Don't leave the PC Clinic without making a stop at the Virus Info Library, which provides detailed information about thousands of viruses that you keep hearing about all the time.
McAfee Online also offers a free service called Briefcase, which allows users to store their data (like email, address book, bookmarks, and other essential files) on the Net and access it from anywhere, anytime. And since these files are password protected, they're safe and secure! This service is provided in partnership with Visto, who charge US$9.95 monthly for the same service. But the McAfee Online Briefcase is yours for free!
It's that time of year again, when you get a chance to vote for what's come to be known as "The Oscars of the Internet". The third annual Webby Awards have 22 different categories ranging from Commerce and Music to Science and Weird. Each category has five websites nominations. And like the MTV and Channel V, Viewer's Choice award, all of us Internet surfers get a chance to vote for the winners of "The People's Voice Awards". But as the balloting is being audited by a big name like PricewaterhouseCoopers, you have to register to be able to vote. You will then be emailed the URL where you can cast your vote, along with a password. You need to have a TCP/IP connection, Netscape / IE version 4 and above, and allow cookies to be set. This way the site prevents repeat voting and can allow you to vote and change your votes till the closing date - February 5th, 1999. The 1999 Webby Award nominees await your clicks and picks for the best of the Web. But that's not all - keep your fingers crossed because the organisers are planning on whisking one randomly selected voter and their guest from anywhere in the whole wide world to San Francisco for The 1999 Webby Awards to be held on March 18, 1999. Let's see, should I apply for leave right away??
